Amen. 00:01:04.420 --> 00:01:07.180 Let me give you an introduction to Mark before we begin reading. 00:01:08.240 --> 00:01:11.000 No book has been translated more than Mark's gospel. 00:01:11.880 --> 00:01:15.620 One reason is that it's the shortest gospel, but perhaps an even bigger reason 00:01:16.200 --> 00:01:21.860 is that the book was written for the Romans, not people who were familiar with Judaism in the first century. 00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:28.960 so therefore it appeals to a larger audience. Now, Mark, also known as John Mark, was not one 00:01:28.960 --> 00:01:33.800 of the twelve disciples, but it is likely that he was part of the crowds that often followed Jesus. 00:01:34.960 --> 00:01:39.560 Many scholars believe that Mark was the first written of the four Gospels, though some think 00:01:39.560 --> 00:01:44.480 that Matthew was the first, but whatever the case, it is quite likely that it was written around 00:01:44.880 --> 00:01:51.860 50 AD. Acts 12.12 tells us that the early church met in Mark's mother Mary's house in Jerusalem. 00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:59.540 The book is full of movement. We see Jesus always in action. We see the words like immediately and 00:01:59.640 --> 00:02:05.600 at once often in this book. Now, as you might expect from that, what Jesus did is more the 00:02:05.770 --> 00:02:10.759 subject of Mark's gospel than what he said. Commentator A.T. Robertson said, 00:02:11.180 --> 00:02:17.179 The gospel of Mark pictures Christ in action. There is a minimum of discourse and a maximum 00:02:17.200 --> 00:02:24.080 of deed. And speaking of action, Jesus is portrayed here as the servant of God, as one who's going 00:02:24.360 --> 00:02:29.360 about doing the work of God. So you might be asking, since Mark was not one of the twelve 00:02:29.620 --> 00:02:34.180 disciples, where did he get the information contained in the book? Well, church tradition 00:02:34.460 --> 00:02:40.879 has it that the apostle Peter was Mark's main source of information. We know from 1 Peter 5.13 00:02:40.900 --> 00:02:47.460 that Mark was with Peter, and Peter called him my son, as an older man might refer to a beloved 00:02:47.800 --> 00:02:52.740 student. Well, since Peter was one of the twelve, we know that Peter was an eyewitness to Jesus' 00:02:53.060 --> 00:02:58.480 ministry. Listen again to what A.T. Robertson wrote. He said, Mark's gospel is the fullest 00:02:58.800 --> 00:03:04.280 gospel of striking details that apparently came from Peter's discourses which Mark heard, 00:03:04.740 --> 00:03:10.360 such as green grass, two thousand hogs, or looking round about. 00:03:11.620 --> 00:03:14.960 And another indication of Peter's input also from Robertson is this. 00:03:15.900 --> 00:03:21.640 Peter usually spoke in Aramaic, and Mark has more Aramaic phrases than the other Gospels, 00:03:21.860 --> 00:03:27.340 like Boanerges, Talitha-Kumai, Korban, Ephatha, and Abba. 00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:30.380 Well, that's enough introduction.
