Even the wind and the waves obey him. 00:09:52.640 --> 00:09:55.220 Today I've got comments on both chapters 3 and 4. 00:09:56.180 --> 00:09:58.740 Mark chapter 3, 28 and 29 says, 00:09:59.260 --> 00:10:04.580 I assure you, people will be forgiven for all sins and whatever blasphemies they may blaspheme. 00:10:05.060 --> 00:10:11.000 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin. 00:10:12.100 --> 00:10:14.560 Well, beloved, this passage receives a lot of attention. 00:10:15.300 --> 00:10:21.560 blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the one unforgivable sin. So what is it? People worry about that. 00:10:22.460 --> 00:10:27.200 Let's talk about it. To answer the question, let's first put these three verses into context. 00:10:27.920 --> 00:10:34.100 The scribes had just said of Jesus, He has Beelzebul in him, and He drives out demons by the 00:10:34.270 --> 00:10:39.860 ruler of the demons. So, here Jesus has been performing miracles, healing people, casting 00:10:40.120 --> 00:10:45.260 demons out of people, and forgiving people. And the scribes said that He did that by the power of 00:10:45.280 --> 00:10:52.300 Satan. Jesus' answer to their accusation was, of course, perfect. He said, How can Satan drive out 00:10:52.460 --> 00:10:58.320 Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided 00:10:58.540 --> 00:11:03.860 against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan rebels against himself and is divided, 00:11:04.400 --> 00:11:10.340 he cannot stand but is finished. So in saying this, Jesus was pointing out to them that Satan 00:11:10.360 --> 00:11:16.180 would never work against himself. And then next he gave them an illustration or parable. He said, 00:11:16.820 --> 00:11:22.160 On the other hand, no one can enter a strong man's house and rob his possessions unless he first 00:11:22.440 --> 00:11:28.260 ties up the strong man. Then he will rob his house. In this parable, Satan is the strong man 00:11:28.460 --> 00:11:34.540 guarding what belongs to him. Jesus was saying, I am not in league with Satan. I am demonstrating 00:11:34.620 --> 00:11:40.320 that I am stronger than he is. So by casting demons out of people, Jesus was taking from Satan 00:11:40.340 --> 00:11:47.360 belonged to him one life or one soul at a time. As one commentator said, there is nothing in our 00:11:47.540 --> 00:11:54.200 life that must stay under Satan's domination. So Jesus binds the strong man and plunders his house. 00:11:54.920 --> 00:11:59.360 Now let's get back to answering the question at hand, what is blaspheming the Holy Spirit? 00:12:00.420 --> 00:12:05.780 Well, let's look at what the Holy Spirit's ministry is. Jesus tells us in John 15, 26, 00:12:06.700 --> 00:12:14.900 When the Counselor comes, the one I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me. 00:12:15.840 --> 00:12:17.380 The Counselor is the Holy Spirit. 00:12:18.120 --> 00:12:18.880 How do we know that? 00:12:19.120 --> 00:12:21.580 Well, in John 14.26, Jesus said, 00:12:21.990 --> 00:12:29.860 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, the Father will send him in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you. 00:12:30.660 --> 00:12:34.340 So, the Holy Spirit is who tells us the truth about Jesus. 00:12:34.920 --> 00:12:39.660 He lives on us and he testifies to our heart that Jesus is who he says he is. 00:12:40.380 --> 00:12:45.920 Well, by blaspheming the Holy Spirit, a person is in the sorrowful state of rejecting Jesus. 00:12:46.880 --> 00:12:52.320 If a person continually rejects Jesus, they are rejecting the forgiveness that is only available 00:12:52.680 --> 00:12:57.920 through Jesus. It's not that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is too big a sin to be forgiven. 00:12:58.360 --> 00:13:02.700 It's that this person has cut off the only way that he or she can be forgiven. 00:13:03.240 --> 00:13:05.740 Commentator H.A. Ironside put it this way, 00:13:06.620 --> 00:13:12.260 These words were never intended to torment anxious souls honestly desiring to know Christ, 00:13:12.690 --> 00:13:18.020 but they stand out as a blazing beacon warning of the danger of persisting in the rejection 00:13:18.580 --> 00:13:25.160 of the Spirit's testimony of Christ until the seared conscience no longer responds to the gospel 00:13:25.500 --> 00:13:31.600 message.
