Yeah, you probably have. How do you think that goes along with Scripture? 00:10:09.100 --> 00:10:15.700 Jeremiah 17, 9 says, the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it? 00:10:16.380 --> 00:10:21.660 And what did Jesus say about the heart? Well, today in Mark chapter 7, verses 14 through 23, 00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:27.000 Jesus talked about what it is that defiles a person. Jesus was speaking to the crowd here, 00:10:27.300 --> 00:10:33.000 and what he said here was new information. He said, There's nothing outside the man which can 00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:38.240 defile him if it goes into him, but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the 00:10:38.380 --> 00:10:43.260 man. You see, most of the people in the crowd were Jews, and you can be sure that some who were 00:10:43.480 --> 00:10:49.500 listening were Jewish leaders, well-versed in the law. And from a very young age, these people were 00:10:49.580 --> 00:10:54.960 taught that there were certain things that would defile them if touched, among them a dead body, 00:10:55.420 --> 00:10:59.020 certain skin diseases, bodily fluids, unclean foods. 00:10:59.410 --> 00:11:04.700 And in this instance, Jesus is talking about eating foods that some would consider unclean. 00:11:05.280 --> 00:11:09.740 And he says that what you eat does not make you unclean or defiled. 00:11:10.320 --> 00:11:13.840 He says that what comes out of a person is what defiles them. 00:11:14.700 --> 00:11:18.520 Later, when Jesus and the disciples were away from the crowd, they asked him to explain. 00:11:19.460 --> 00:11:24.020 He said that food doesn't go into the heart, but into the stomach and then is eliminated. 00:11:24.740 --> 00:11:29.900 It's what comes out of the heart that makes a person defiled, because that's where evil thoughts, 00:11:30.260 --> 00:11:37.160 murder, sensuality, envy, pride, and all sorts of evil things come from. That's why Proverbs 4.23 00:11:37.520 --> 00:11:43.700 says, Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. The thoughts 00:11:43.710 --> 00:11:50.520 and ideas we entertain can either help us conform to Jesus or to the world.
