It says, 00:14:17.180 --> 00:14:22.260 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 00:14:23.380 --> 00:14:28.720 God spoke those words and the entire Ten Commandments to Moses, who was to take them to the people. 00:14:29.320 --> 00:14:33.880 And God Himself wrote these ten laws on two stone tablets. 00:14:34.630 --> 00:14:36.580 It was not Moses who wrote on the tablets. 00:14:37.070 --> 00:14:37.880 It was God. 00:14:38.860 --> 00:14:41.120 Now, let's break this sentence down, shall we? 00:14:41.380 --> 00:14:44.720 There's a tremendous amount of information that we can glean from these words. 00:14:45.680 --> 00:14:48.440 So it begins, I am the Lord your God. 00:14:49.680 --> 00:14:52.080 Here, God is asserting His authority. 00:14:52.500 --> 00:14:57.600 his right to establish the law to which the people of Israel must be bound. 00:14:58.680 --> 00:15:03.900 The reason they must be obedient to this law is that, number one, God is the Lord, Jehovah, 00:15:04.540 --> 00:15:10.660 self-existent, independent, eternal, and the source of everything that is. Therefore, 00:15:11.160 --> 00:15:19.599 he has the absolute right to rule. And number two, he was their God, in covenant or agreement 00:15:19.620 --> 00:15:26.440 with them. They agreed to this arrangement. And then he continued, who brought you out of the 00:15:26.580 --> 00:15:33.320 land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. So therefore, they were bound to obey him out of 00:15:33.480 --> 00:15:39.020 gratitude, because he delivered them out of terrible slavery into a liberty that they had 00:15:39.140 --> 00:15:45.240 never known. He redeemed them, and in doing so, he had an even greater right to rule them. 00:15:45.780 --> 00:15:54.740 They owed Him their service, their very lives. Remember from our reading today, 00:16:15.320 --> 00:16:20.820 the people were terrified when they heard the thunder and saw the smoke. They told Moses that 00:16:20.920 --> 00:16:27.980 they did not want to face God. But Jesus said in John 15, 15, I no longer call you servants because 00:16:27.980 --> 00:16:34.059 a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends. For everything 00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:40.920 that I learned from my Father, I have made known to you. And then in Mark chapter 3, Jesus said, 00:16:41.240 --> 00:16:48.160 we are his brothers if we do God's will. Beloved, if we follow Jesus, God is not a God to be 00:16:48.380 --> 00:16:52.340 terrified of like the children of Israel were when they heard the thunder and saw the smoke 00:16:52.500 --> 00:16:58.879 at Mount Sinai. Yes, we should have a healthy respect and awe, but not the kind of terror that 00:16:58.900 --> 00:17:04.819 comes from the uncertainty of an irrational, unreasonable, unpredictable force. God can be 00:17:05.100 --> 00:17:11.020 surprising, but He has revealed Himself to us through His Word, and we know, above all, that 00:17:11.319 --> 00:17:17.740 according to 1 John 4, 8, God is love.
