Steve Webb 0:00 I'm so glad that our true citizenship is a heavenly one. Steve Webb 0:11 This is the Lifespring one year Bible coming to you from Riverside, California. And podcasting since 2004. I'm your og Godcaster. Steve Webb. This is a daily podcast and we're reading through the entire Bible in a year. It's Psalms Wednesday, and we're going to read Psalms 57 through 59. I'm calling the episode. At least they're consistent. And we'll have a time of praise and prayer requests before we read. Let's pray. Our Father, our gracious heavenly Father, our Creator, we love you, and we thank you for this time together. I pray that as we read your word you would teach us open our minds open our hearts and I pray this in Jesus name, amen. Okay, beloved, you're ready. Let's begin. Steve Webb 0:55 The title of Psalm 57 is "to the chief musician set to do not destroy a michtam of David when he fled from Saul into the cave." In reference to "do not destroy," Bible commentator Derek Kidner said, "this may well be a tune indication compared with Isaiah 65 Eight where the phrase is identified as a popular saying, perhaps a snatch of a vintage song and borrowed to become a reassuring word from God. Yet notice also David's instructions about Saul destroy him not in First Samuel 26 Nine." So the phrase do not destroy might be merely a notation giving the tune of the psalm or a plea to God to protect David, or a statement of David's intention to not destroy Saul. The Psalm is another michtam or golden Psalm indicating that this was a special highly regarded song. But the word michtam literally means an engraving or sculpture. So it could be that David actually engraved this psalm on the walls of the cave. Speaking of the cave, this cave was probably the one mentioned in First Samuel 22 One when David was fleeing Saul. Steve Webb 2:09 Psalms chapter 57. Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in you. I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings until danger passes. I call to God most high to God who fulfills His purpose for me. He reaches down from heaven and saves me challenging the one who tramples me Sayla God sends His faithful love and truth. I am surrounded by lions. I lie down with those who devour men. Their teeth are spears and arrows. Their tongues are sharp swords. God be exalted above the heavens, let your glory be over the whole earth. They prepared a net for my steps. I was despondent, they dug a pit ahead of me, but they fell into it. Sayla My heart is confident god, my heart is confident. I will sing I will sing praises wake up my soul. Wake up harp and lyre I will wake up the dawn, I will praise you Lord among the peoples I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your faithful love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches the clouds. God be exalted above the heavens. Let your glory be over the whole earth. Steve Webb 3:29 The title of Psalm 58 is "to the chief musician set to do not destroy and michtam of David. Steve Webb 3:38 Psalms chapter 58. Do you rulers really say what is right? Do you judge people fairly? know in your heart you play an evil. You think of violent crimes in the land. From birth. evil people turn away from God. They wander off and tell lies as soon as they are born. They are like poisonous snakes, like deaf cobras that stop up their ears so they cannot hear the music of the snake charmer no matter how well he plays. God break the teeth in their mouths. Tear out the fangs of those lions Lord. Let them disappear like water that flows away. Let them be cut short like a broken arrow. Let them be like snails that melt as they move. Let them be like a child born dead who never saw the sun. His anger will blow them away alive faster than burning thorns can heat a pot. Good people will be glad when they see him get even. They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked. Then people will say there really are rewards for doing what is right. There really is a God who judges the world. Steve Webb 4:48 The title of Psalm 59 is to the chief musician set to do not destroy the MiG tam of David when Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to kill Him. We read of this His time in First Samuel 1911 through 12. When Saul's intention to kill David was revealed and David had to run for his life. Steve Webb 5:08 Psalms chapter 59 Oh my god, deliver me from my enemies put me out of reach from those who rise up against me. Deliver me from evildoers save me from the blood thirsty. Look at how they lie in ambush for my life. Powerful people are attacking me, Lord, but not because of any error or sin of mine. They run and take their stand, but not because of any fault of mine. Get up when I cry out to you. Look at what's happening. You are the Lord God of heavenly forces, the God of Israel. Wake up and punish all the nations grant no mercy to any wicked trader Sayla they come back every evening growling like dogs prowling around the city. See what they belch out with their mouths. Swords are between their lips, who can listen to them, but you Lord, laugh at them. You mock all the nations, I keep looking for you my strength, because God is my stronghold, my loving God will come to meet me. God will allow me to look down on my enemies. Don't kill them, or my people might forget. Instead, by Your power, shake them up and bring them down. You who are our shield and my Lord, for the sin of their mouths, the words that they speak. Let them be captured in their pride. For the curses and lies they repeat, finish them off and anger finish them off until they are done. Let it be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob Sayla they come back every evening growling like dogs prowling around the city. They roam about for food. And if they don't get their fill, they stay all night. But me I will sing of your strength. In the morning I will shout out loud about your faithful love, because you have been my stronghold, my shelter when I was distraught. I will sing praises to you my strength because God is my stronghold, my loving God. Steve Webb 7:06 Beloved, when I read Psalm 58, I can't help but think of politicians and how they haven't changed much since David's time. David is most likely writing about the rulers or judges who were under King Saul and had passed judgment on him as a fugitive. But I'm pretty sure a politician is a politician is a politician, no matter what year it is. Unfortunately, humans are rarely able to wield power and influence without succumbing to the temptations dangled in front of them. There's a reason term limits are good. And in my opinion, every public office should have term limits elected and non elected. Humans are just so frail in terms of the integrity needed to deal with power. I'm so glad that our true citizenship is a heavenly one. Sure, I'm proud to be an American as you should be proud to be a citizen of whatever country you're in. However, I'm very much looking forward to the day when we no longer have to deal with earthly rulers, aren't you? What do you think? Steve Webb 8:34 Prayer requests and praises. Kathi was approved for the new cancer drug. So that's a praise. This is a drug that comes in pill form instead of infusions which required Kathy to spend hours in the hospital every couple of weeks and the pill is taken once a day. And supposedly the side effects are minimal. So that's great. We need to pray that this would be an effective drug for our Heavenly Father, You are God, Creator of all that is you are above all your holy, you're righteous and you're loving and you're merciful. You are worthy of praise, worship and adoration and we offer these to you now. Hallelujah, hallelujah, praise your name. Father, we pray that your will would be done and each of our lives help his father to cling to you and desire Your presence in our lives. We thank you for allowing Kathi to have this new cancer drug and we pray that you would use it to bring healing to her body. Not that you need this drug to heal her. You could do it with just a word but for reasons known only to you. Sometimes you do use these things, whatever or however you work. We know that all good things come from you. Lord, continue to bring healing to Kathy we pray in Jesus name. And I thank You Father for each one listening right now the Lifespring family and I pray that You would bless each one. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen. Sunday will be our next time of prayer. Question praises.
