Today we call them astrologers or even scientists. 00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:50.440 They were experts in astronomy and astrology, which for them was pretty much the same thing, 00:05:50.900 --> 00:05:55.600 and they followed the patterns of the stars religiously. They would have been very rich and 00:05:55.640 --> 00:06:00.799 thought of in very high esteem, even by people who weren't from their country. Although they're 00:06:00.820 --> 00:06:05.220 called the three kings, the bible doesn't say anything about how many wise men there were, 00:06:05.560 --> 00:06:11.100 or in fact even if they were kings. At the time that Jesus was born, the kings of Yemen were Jews, 00:06:11.520 --> 00:06:16.040 so people might have thought that these were the kings. And the wise men became three in number 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:20.300 because they bought three gifts with them. But we don't know how many there were that went, 00:06:20.820 --> 00:06:24.940 but with all their servants and entourage, there's probably more than three people sitting on camels. 00:06:25.860 --> 00:06:29.600 Studying the night sky, the wise men had seen a new and very unusual star, 00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:32.600 and knew that it told about the birth of a very special king. 00:06:33.380 --> and Saturn the planet of new beginnings. 00:07:10.300 --> 00:07:16.540 So a star, or what looked like a new star, appearing in that constellation would have meant a great deal to the scientists of that time. 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:25.300 Astrology wasn't widely practiced by the Jews during that time, but it was by a few Jews and many Arabs, such as those who lived around the area of Yemen. exploding star, also appeared in 5 BC. 00:07:43.460 --> 00:07:47.340 All or none of these might have been or contributed to the star of Bethlehem, 00:07:47.570 --> 00:07:48.560 we just don't know. 00:07:49.340 --> 00:07:53.940 But there certainly was a large amount of activity in the night sky over Israel at that time, 00:07:54.200 --> 00:08:00.280 and I'm sure that God could have arranged the to embalm dead bodies and it showed that Jesus would suffer and die. 00:08:59.579 --> 00:09:05.600 Frankincense and myrrh both have some antiseptic and healing properties and are still being a dream what Herod really intended to do, so they travelled home by a different route. 00:09:16.460 --> 00:09:18.860 Because Herod didn't find out where this new king was, 00:09:19.400 --> 00:09:25.520 he decided that the only way to be rid of him was to kill every baby boy under two years old in Bethlehem and the surrounding area. 00:09:26.120 --> 00:09:30.080 He knew about Bethlehem for some very old prophecies in the Old Testament of the Bible. 00:09:31.080 --> 00:09:35.640 And there's historical records that says that Herod had baby boys killed in 4 BC. 00:09:36.000 --> consider doing so shows how desperate and power-crazed Herod was. 00:09:49.480 --> 00:09:53.960 This also fulfilled another prophecy in the Bible about children in Israel being killed. 00:09:55.140 --> 00:10:00.500 But Jesus was kept safe as Joseph, warned about Herod in a dream, took him and Mary to Egypt. 00:10:01.780 --> 00:10:06.700 So Jesus was also a refugee, something that not many people Gaspar represents the frankincense brought to Jesus. Melchior who's the 00:10:52.800 --> 00:10:58.620 king of Arabia has a long white beard and long white hair and he wears a gold cloak and Melchior 00:10:58.920 --> 00:11:04.400 represents the gold brought to Jesus. Balthazar who's the king of Tarshish in Egypt has black skin 00:11:04.680 --> 00:11:10.100 and a black beard or sometimes no beard and wears a purple cloak. Balthazar represents the gift of 00:11:10.120 --> 00:11:15.300 myrrh that was bought.
